About Yangtse Incident: The Story of H.M.S. Amethyst
While sailing lawfully up the Yangste in 1949, the British warship Amethyst found its return to the open sea blocked by Communist Chinese shore batteries that unexpectedly opened fire. In charge, Lietenant Commander Kerans was not however prepared for his crew and his ship to remain as a hostage for the Chinese to use as an international pawn.
Directed by Michael Anderson, Yangtse Incident: The Story of H.M.S. Amethyst leans on a strong ensemble — Richard Todd, William Hartnell, Akim Tamiroff — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about war titles of 1957.
