This film begins with a teacher describing to his students how brave the crew was which died as result of Japan's first submarine accident. The film then follows two of the pupils, one becomes a submarine captain and the other designs submarines.
Directed by Masamitsu Igayama, Submarine Number One leans on a strong ensemble — Koji Nakata, Shirô Izome, Ichirō Izawa — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about war titles of 1941.
