About The Wreck in the North Sea
Het wrak in de Noordzee ('The North Sea Wreck') is a fisherman's drama about the romance between the daughter of a Scheveningen captain and a young fisherman. Their love is threatened when another fisherman sinks the boat of his rival, and blackmails the girl's father to give away her hand in marriage. Eventually the missing fisherman pops up again, and marries his beloved. His criminal rival is punished.
Directed by Theo Frenkel Sr., The Wreck in the North Sea leans on a strong ensemble — Julie Meijer, Kees Lageman, Wilhelmina Kleij — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1915.
