About The High-Born Child and the Beggar
A short melodrama about the friendship between a rich boy (in a wheelchair) and a poor street girl. When he falls seriously ill, she is not allowed to visit him. After his death, she also dies, on the street. In her hand she holds a flower, which was the last gift that the boy gave to her.
Directed by Edmund Lawrence, The High-Born Child and the Beggar leans on a strong ensemble — Adelaide Lawrence, George Stewart, Stephen Purdee — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1913.
