The film marks the last motion picture appearance by stage actor Robert B. Mantell who plays Cardinal Richelieu and the only silent screen performance of opera singer John Charles Thomas.
Directed by Alan Crosland, Under the Red Robe leans on a strong ensemble — Robert B. Mantell, Alma Rubens, Otto Kruger — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about history titles of 1923.
