About Zootrópio
A zoetrope is a pre-film animation device. It consists of a cylinder with slits cut vertically in the sides. On the inner surface of the cylinder is a band with images from a set of sequenced pictures. By turning it, the user sees a rapid succession of images, producing the illusion of motion.
Directed by Tiago Rosa-Rosso, Zootrópio leans on a strong ensemble — Ana Monteiro, António Dente, Inês Cartaxo — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about screen titles of 2016.
