Patterned after Japanese art and silk screens, Taro, The Dragon Boy is an animated feature about Japanese mythology and cultures, focusing on Taro, a young boy who has to make a voyage to a distant lake to save his mother, who has been turned into a dragon.
Directed by Kirio Urayama, Taro the Dragon Boy leans on a strong ensemble — Junya Kato, Mina Tominaga, Sayuri Yoshinaga — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about fantasy titles of 1979.
