About Fever Mounts at El Pao
After Caribbean despot Mariano Vargas is murdered at the hands of his enraged populace, his secretary Ramón Vázquez takes not just control but also Vargas' widow Inés, with whom he's been having an affair. Special military unit leader Alejandro Gual arrives to overthrow Vázquez by turning the people and Inés against him.
Directed by Luis Buñuel, Fever Mounts at El Pao leans on a strong ensemble — María Félix, Gérard Philipe, Jean Servais — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1959.
