In the late 19th century, rakugo student Taihei gives up hope of making the grade, and his despair leads him to take up residence at a rowhouse in Tokyo's Fukagawa district. There he meets an emotionally distant boy named Sadakichi, and as fate would have it, he ends up teaching him rakugo.
Directed by Hiroyuki Itaya, His Master's Voice leans on a strong ensemble — Taihei Hayashiya, Nayuta Fukuzaki, Yasuko Tomita — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 2014.
