About The Island of Aphrodite
In Cyprus, an EOKA fighter (against the British Administration), Kyriakoulis, is imprisoned by the British. His comrades kidnap the son of a friend of the British Administrator in retaliation. Plans to help Kyriakoulis escape fails and the British hang him. Kyriakoulis mother intervenes magnanimously and the fighters free their prisoner.
Directed by Giorgos Skalenakis, The Island of Aphrodite leans on a strong ensemble — Katina Paxinou, Angelos Antonopoulos, Takis Asimakopoulos — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1965.
