About The Legend of the Holy Drinker
Andreas Kartak, a homeless man living under the bridges of Paris, is lent 200 francs by a stranger as long as he promises to repay it to a local church when he can afford to. Kartak is determined to pay back his debt but circumstances, and his alcoholism, forever intervene.
Directed by Ermanno Olmi, The Legend of the Holy Drinker leans on a strong ensemble — Rutger Hauer, Anthony Quayle, Sandrine Dumas — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1988.
