About People of the Grasslands
The People on the Grassland is one of the earliest “minority nationality films” produced in the PRC. It features Mongolian herders who serve the people in the struggle against the forces of the KMT. The film was released in China in 1953 and became particularly well-known for its songs and theme-music.
Directed by Xu Tao, People of the Grasslands leans on a strong ensemble — Rina Ma, En Hesen, Xiaofei Sun — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1953.
