In the summer of 1944, long-range reconnaissance soldier Jaakko Tulivaara returns to his family and girlfriend Anna for a break in his home village in Kainuu, located near the Soviet border and the war zone, which is protected from partisans by a military unit led by Sergeant Tolvanen.
Directed by Timo Linnasalo, Vartioitu kylä 1944 leans on a strong ensemble — Raimo Grönberg, Timo Torikka, Antti Litja — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about war titles of 1978.
