
The film tells the story of an artist trapped in poverty. Kemal, once a famous theater actor, is now unemployed. Poverty causes him to lose his wife and son. When his health deteriorates, he even resorts to juggling. Just when he has lost all hope, Leyla appears. Leyla has become paralyzed after falling while dancing at a nightclub. On the day she attempts suicide, Kemal finds her. The old man has forgotten his own troubles. His sole purpose is to help Leyla reconnect with life. He has placed the young girl in the place of his son, whom he has been separated from for years. Together with Leyla, Kemal will also heal.
Directed by Nejat Saydam, Gülerken Ağlayanlar leans on a strong ensemble — Yıldırım Önal, Perihan Savaş, Salih Güney — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1973.
