The National Film and Sound Archive of Australia call it “a structured diary film which investigates the process of living in Sydney, which uses a repeating light modulation to intensify experiences of light, heat, colour”.
Directed by Albie Thoms, Sunshine City leans on a strong ensemble — Jim Anderson, Cynthia Dyer-Bennet, David Elfick — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about documentary titles of 1973.
