About Honolulu
Produced and directed by seven Munich Film School students, Honolulu takes place not in Hawaii, but inside of a rural town just outside of Munich, Germany. Several vignettes, lasting approximately 10 to 15 minutes each, are connected by one of the town’s public bus routes, outside of which two men booze the night away while waiting for the bus to make its rounds.
Directed by Sandra Schmidt, Uschi Ferstl, Saskia Jell, Matthias Lehmann, Vanessa Jopp, Florian Gallenberger, Beryl Schennen, Honolulu leans on a strong ensemble — Alexandra Maria Lara, Markus von Lingen, Shira Fleisher — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about comedy titles of 2001.
