The story was inspired by a real incident that created a commotion in 2008 involving Verry Idham Henryansah, nicknamed Ryan, 34, who murdered 11 people and mutilated them. The confession in his prison autobiography, "The Untold Story of Ryan", revealed that Ryan often caught his mother cheating with many men. The film is in digital format.
Directed by Steady Rimba, Rien the Serial Killer leans on a strong ensemble — Guntur Triyoga, Bari Irawan, Ubaydillah — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about thriller titles of 2008.
