As we hear all the dialogue of a bygone movie, we travel visually through images of absence and decay, bereft of life. It's the ghost of a film, and a further commentary on colonialism.
Directed by Marguerite Duras, Son nom de Venise dans Calcutta désert leans on a strong ensemble — Delphine Seyrig, Michael Lonsdale, Sylvie Nuytten — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1976.
