About Ghosts of the Past
At the end of the 17th century, Georgia, weakened by war with foreign enemies and internal feudal disorder, came under the influence of Iran. Georgian kings had to fight under the Iranian flag. A similar fate befell King George XI. He was forced to spend most of his life in Afghanistan and Baluchistan to quell the revolts against Iran.
Directed by Levan Tutberidze, Ghosts of the Past leans on a strong ensemble — Otar Megvinetukhutsesi, Zura Kipshidze, Givi Berikashvili — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1996.
