About The Five Roses of Jennifer
Jennifer is a melancholic and romantically unsatisfied transgender woman who lives in a small apartment in Naples. Meanwhile, a serial killer is targeting the trans residents of the neighborhood. Jennifer spends each night listening to the radio and waiting for a phone call or the return of Franco, an engineer who left Naples for work and who Jennifer previously had a relationshp with. The phones in the neighborhood are unreliable and lines are frequently crossed. Anna, another transgender woman who lives in the same building visits Jennifer's apartment one evening, believing that Jennifer is receiving her calls. The two strangers talk and wait for the phone to ring.
Directed by Tomaso Sherman, The Five Roses of Jennifer leans on a strong ensemble — Francesco Silvestri, Massimo Abbate, Tosca D'Aquino — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1989.
