About Ibu Mertua
After the graduation from “Sekolah Kepandaian Putri” (Female-Skill School) or SKP, Lena works as a housemaid for Toto’s family as she cannot afford to continue her education. Pardan is also living in the same house. When she returns from “tetirah” (a Javanese term for a short vacation in a health resort), Mrs. Toto is agitated by the presence of the new housemaid from SKP. Toto calms her down by making up a story that Lena is actually the fiancée of Pardan. But the pretence becomes real love and Pardan and Lena finally get married.
Directed by Rempo Urip, Ibu Mertua leans on a strong ensemble — Ermina Zaenah, Darussalam, Awaludin — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1960.
