About The Lovers of Montparnasse
Biographic film chronicling the last year of the life of the Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani, 1919, who falls in love with a girl from a wealthy family. Her parents are against this relationship and stop financial help. Modigliani worked and died in abject poverty in the Montparnasse Quarter of Paris, France.
Directed by Jacques Becker, The Lovers of Montparnasse leans on a strong ensemble — Gérard Philipe, Lilli Palmer, Lea Padovani — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about romance titles of 1958.
