About Kyōkai-sen no mukō-gawa
One day, Hiroshi was helping in an acquaintance's shop and accidentally breaks a jar that cost 1 million yen. Hiroshi can't pay for that and he calls his parents' house as a last resort. He receives news that his father is ill with only 1 year left. Hiroshi wants to make his father happy and decides on a fake marriage. They find a lesbian teacher called Ayako interested in fake marriage on the internet. However, when they go to meet her the angry girlfriend of Ayako called Ami shows up and a man tries to catch Hiroshi for not paying his 1 million yen debt. They steal a van and Ami, Hiroshi and Toshiya drive off in hopes of finding Ayako.
Directed by Ikuyo Koyauchi, Kyōkai-sen no mukō-gawa leans on a strong ensemble — Taishi Takemoto, Hideki Nishioka, Mayuko Sasaki — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1998.
