On June 24, 1969, Etsuko Takano, a 20-year-old third-year student at Ritsumeikan University, jumped in front of a train and died instantly. She left no suicide note, but did leave over a dozen diaries. This film is based on her writings.
Directed by Kenjirô Ohmori, The Origin of Twenty Years Old leans on a strong ensemble — Yuriko Sumi, Masaaki Daimon, Takeo Chii — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1973.
