Just under two weeks before the election, a party’s leading candidate is kidnapped, and a large ransom is demanded. When the party provides the money but the handover by its chairman fails, a sinister suspicion begins to take root among those involved. The kidnapped man’s wife takes the initiative and comes to some bitter realizations.

Directed by Miguel Alexandre, Macht leans on a strong ensemble — Katja Riemann, Peter Sattmann, Dietmar Schönherr — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.

The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about thriller titles of 1998.
