About Lintah Darat
Although they are siblings, Asnah and Kumala have very different characters. The older sister Asnah is rude while Kumala is kind. Asnah is attracted to Safi'i, but he is more interested in softhearted Kumala. Out of disappointment, Asnah runs off to the city and becomes a singer. Meanwhile Kumala has to borrow money from a loan shark to get medical treatment for her sick mother. It turns out that Asnah is married to the loan shark. Finally, Kumala runs into Safi’I, who is in a taskforce aimed at eradicating illegal money lending, and he helps her to solve the problem.
Directed by Wu Tsun, Lintah Darat leans on a strong ensemble — Elly Joenara, Miss Satijem, M. Arief — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about drama titles of 1941.
