Peyami Safa's novel Cumbadan Rumbaya features some of the most extraordinary characters in his works. It tells the story of Karagümrüklü Cemile, whose sole desire is to escape her dilapidated home and neighborhood and move into an apartment in Nişantaşı, where she hopes to find a wealthy husband.
Directed by Turgut Demirağ, Cumbadan Rumbaya leans on a strong ensemble — Çolpan İlhan, Efgan Efekan, Mürüvvet Sim Caymaz — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about romance titles of 1960.
