Gariban

Afacan, who lives with his father and stepmother, one day finds an old family photo album in the attic. His father begins to tell him the story of his real mother. Years ago, Murat saved Gül—who had attempted suicide—from death and brought her back to life. They marry, but a treacherous trap set by Osman, Murat’s assistant at the factory, tears the couple apart. Unable to accept what had happened, Gül ends up in a mental institution. Osman’s second plan is to eliminate Afacan and his father and, with the help of his stepmother Jale, lay claim to a vast fortune. Afacan accidentally overhears the truth about his mother and is heartbroken.

Directed by Mehmet Dinler, Gariban leans on a strong ensemble — Menderes Utku, Hale Soygazi, Ediz Hun — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.

The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about screen titles of 1974.
