Marjorie Beebe is a saloon singer, and Frank Eastman is the piano player and her boyfriend. He's got a roving eye, and she's making a play for the boss, who is crazy about her. So they slang each other, and beat on each other, and are very happy in their abusive relationship, which saloon owner Frank Sabini tries to break up, with machine-gun fire if necessary.
Directed by Mack Sennett, Rough Idea of Love leans on a strong ensemble — Marjorie Beebe, Frank Eastman, Frank Sabini — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about comedy titles of 1930.
