Alex Cross is a brilliant but flawed homicide detective and full of contradictions. A doting father and family man, Cross is single-minded to the point of obsession when he hunts killers. He is desperate for love, but his wife’s murder has left him too damaged to receive it.

When Andrea, a damage regulator from Benthos Oil, is sent out to Rig 45 two days before Christmas to investigate a fatal accident, the rig is hit by a hurricane and all communications lost. Soon, the crew realize that the accident is in fact a murder, and they now know that they are in real danger.

During her many visits to friends and relatives in other villages, Miss Marple often stumbles upon mysterious murders which she helps solve. Although the police are sometimes reluctant to accept Miss Marple's help, her reputation and unparalleled powers of observation eventually win them over.
