A tale of murder and marriage in 1625 Denmark.

A carpenter’s apprentice, Spaan (‘Chip’), has been thrown out by his master for being romantically involved with his daughter, Ernestine. On the road, he meets the slender tailor’s apprentice Naal (‘Needle’) and the drunken shoemaker’s apprentice Syl (Awl), and the three form a warm friendship. One day, they are lucky to win a large sum of money in the lottery, after which they go their separate ways with the promise of meeting up again one year later. Doctor Thaw cheats on his wife, Rose, with her friend, Nina. One evening, while he’s out enjoying his secret happiness, Rose is murdered by a burglar, and he finds her limp and cold body in their marital bed the next morning. Out of respect for Nina, he refuses to say where he was at the time of the murder and ends up being charged with the murder of his wife. 12 years will have to pass before they meet again. Editor Halling is always looking for sensations in his newspaper. It is apparently an unusually cunning gang and the police are powerless. Between the numerous newspaper delivery is the little newspaper girl Suzanne, called Sus, and she manage a small newsstand in Adelgade.

The famous dancer Elva Marja is hotly pursued by man-of-the-world Henry Corner. He follows her from city to city, buying up all the theatre tickets so that she must perform for him alone, and besieges her house. Elva rejects him time and time again, but Henry’s passion can’t be restrained. One day, Elva is surprised by a burglar in her house.
