Late one evening in Moscow in 1937, Defence Counsel Sedov hears a knock at the door. Three women whose agronomist husbands have been sentenced to death for alleged sabotage beg him to take on the seemingly hopeless task of saving them. But the highest authorities are not so easily outmanoeuvered, and Sedov becomes canonised as a Stalinist zealot, with the film building inexorably to its chilling triple climax.

During a nationwide moral panic caused by a recent spike in teenage suicides two federal investigators are sent to a small Russian town to review a cold case involving a suspicious death of a schoolgirl. Initially seeing their task as a mere PR stunt both gradually start to loose their focus as they venture deeper into the paranoid world of conspiracy theories surrounding the case.

Famous musician Nikita Prozorov is kidnapped in a house in the center of Moscow. Investigator Ivanov finds out that the abduction was staged, and Nikita's mother, Renata, a well-known TV producer, is involved in this. Only one thing is known for sure that Nikita was taken to the clinic in an unconscious state for experimental treatment on computer psychocorrection of personality. To understand the reasons and deep motives of Renata's act, the investigator will have to piece together the history of the complex relationship between mother and son and answer the main question: did Renata kill her son or save his life?

The military echelon arrives in the capital. Victor manages to put a phone call to his native village of Likhobory near Moscow. He arranges to meet his mother and his girlfriend. But it is impossible because of the curfew, so the commander of the echelon takes the risk and permits Somov to go home. This meeting with the people dear to him fills Viktor with the certainty that in Spring he will come home in triumph.
