A widow by the name of Lee Jiu Jin, willingly sold herself to a farway outskirts village without knowing that she is to be shared by 7 men, so as to raise the money for her son's wedding. As these villagers are extremely poor, the men could not afford to keep a wife. This kind of transaction was common in China for women to be sold as brides, but the Government intend to put a stop to such practices by enforcing laws which results in the exile of lawbreakers. Bearing this in mind, Lee and her 7 husbands lived in constant fear of being caught and as for Lee the sufferings and hardships were more than she could bear. As the time passes, Lee grew to understand all 7 men's background, and her hatred for them turn into pity. This relationship at last ended in tragedy.

In 1985, senior high school student A-Qing was found fornicating with a staff member at school and got expelled. His deeply humiliated veteran father has since cast him out of the family, leaving him with nowhere to go but the refuge of his "own kind" at Taipei New Park. In the park, A-Qing encounters a mature man Long Zi (Dragon) and is attracted to him. However, A-Qing also gets daunted by the story of Long Zi committing a crime of passion.

This film is in the style of Liaozhai, consisting of three ghost stories. The first story, "The Horse Girl," depicts the turbulent relationship between a young woman living alone in the suburbs and her beloved horse. The second story, "The Ancient Temple," tells of an assassin hunting down the exiled emperor of a previous dynasty in an ancient hall during a time of political upheaval. The third story, "The Child in the Mirror," portrays a hypocritical old monk who, unable to bear the guilt of his actions, meets a tragic end.
