At 16, the young samurai Maki Bunshirou is in love with Fuku, a daughter of another good family. He spends his year working in the court as a page, and also training in sword-work in the dojo. Then one day his father is caught up in a failed rebellion against the lord and disgraced. After his father commits ritual suicide to atone, Bunshirou's life becomes much darker as his family lives in shame. He is separated from Fuku, who is sent to the capital, Edo. Slowly, Bunshirou begins to regain an honorable position. Then he begins to hear rumors that Fuku has become a concubine of a lord in Edo...

Our story is set in the third century BC in what is now known as Qin Dynasty China. The death of Shin huangti, the first leader strong enough to unite the warring states, has led to uprisings against the Qin hegemony in each territory. Out of all this chaos, Kou U, a general from the Chu State, emerges as a supreme warrior. Together with his uncle, Kou U has seized control of Kaikei. From his newly-acquired stronghold he begins to raise an army.

Heian era Japan. A gentleman discovers an abandoned baby and raises the boy as his adopted son, naming him Nijihito after the rainbow in the sky at the time he was found. The only clue to the boy’s origin is a special drum found with him. Nijihito proves to be a drumming prodigy, outshining his best friend Tatsuru. Although young Ibuki is secretly in love with Nijihito, he falls in love with a mysterious woman he sees playing the flute outside one night.

In the realm of the dead, Luigi Lucheni is on trial for the assassination of Empress Elisabeth. The disembodied voice of the judge rings out, demanding to know why Lucheni killed her. Lucheni responds, in his own defense, that he was doing her a favor as Elisabeth and Death were lovers. He calls upon the ghosts of Elisabeth's family and friends to corroborate this statement. Death appears in their midst, a pale, androgynous, eternally youthful man who admits that he was in love with Elisabeth.
