About Shinjuku Midnight Story: Man and Woman
Kiyomi, a popular hostess at a bar in Shinjuku, has a traumatic childhood that makes her only sensitive to sexual intercourse with women. One day, the girl she loved as a junior hostess betrayed her and slept with her man. Uncomfortable with men, Kiyomi "swaps places" during sex with her new girlfriend, a trans woman Kaoru.
Directed by Kōyū Ohara, Shinjuku Midnight Story: Man and Woman leans on a strong ensemble — Hidemi Hara, Lamy Rose, Yoshie Kitsuda — to carry a story that balances spectacle with character.
The film landed with audiences for its craft and performances, and remains one of the most talked-about comedy titles of 1972.
